Playing The River in Texas Holdem – Missoula Poker

Texas Hold ‘em is a kind of poker in which each player is dealt two cards face down and then five cards face up in the center of the table. The two cards that are face down on the table are called hole cards or pocket cards, while the five other cards that are face up are called board cards or community cards. Each player shares these five board cards to make the best five-card hand from the cards in the hole and the cards on the board. The term “river” is the name for the fifth card dealt, face-up on the board, in community card games like Texas Hold ‘em.

If you’ve made it to the river, then you may have the best hand. From this point, all of the potential value of your hand is turned into realized value. You can no longer improve your hand. Instead, you can force out, fold, or showdown.
Here are some tips for smart river play: All your decisions on whether to bet, fold, call, raise, or re-raise are based on the realized value of your hand from this point. If you’ve made two pair, it will usually win unless the river brings a third suited card. If a third suited card comes out, be extra cautious because you now may have a flush threat against you. If its heads up and there is a large pot, it’s better to call with the worst hand than to fold the winning hand.
